Started off with a Krups, after many years of great tasting coffee had to finally find a replacement. I tried Mr. Coffee and boy WHAT a let down that was, returned to local wholesale club.I have had a few bad experiences with this brands burr grinders so I was hesitant at buying the coffee maker. So far, it has made a pretty good cup of coffee, and the insulated steel pot keeps the coffee hot for many hours. The odd thing is filling it with water without getting it to spill, sort of a poor design there and it tends to spill onto the digital display too, which is not good. A little redesign on the water fill, change the location of the display and they might be on the right track with this one, but hey...for the price I paid with a great discount, it was a pretty cheap experiment. I am thinking after it gives out I will return to a Krups, maybe even a Braun.

V268-22 VILLAWARE Grinder #22 Review

This is a really great, heavy duty grinder.will be very good when all the garden stuff comes in this year, or when I'm ready to make sausage.
only downside it that the ads (and the delivered documents) picture a "two legged" grinder that clamps on the counter (like Mom used to have).the product delivered is a "four legged" cylinder that I'll have to screw to a board and then clamp that to the counter.Bit more inconvenient.But it's #1 quality, make no mistake about that.

Chopper Review

I really like this mincer. I have it for less than a month, so I don't know how it will perform on long run, but for now I am completely satisfied.
I bought it to make a flour.
I have allergy to gluten and yeast, so I have to bake my own breads and cakes.
First - gluten-free flours are very expensive, second - not all of them you can find in supermarket, and you have to look for it in specialty stores.
Like today I found a recipe for brioche, which calls for millet flour; I did not have this, but I had millet grains. I used this machine and now - I have a millet flour.
Plus pound of rice cost $0.99 and pound of rice flour runs from $2.99 to $3.99 per pound, if you use a lot of gluten free flour you will pretty quickly will pay off for this machine (I bought it on another site for $74.00 and shipping was free).
I like also that this machine is small enough. Most of flour mills are very bulky.
I can get pretty fine flour by using Miracle Mincer, but if you are perfectionist maybe it won't be fine enough for you.
Another good quality - it is not extremal loud, even my spooky dogs are not running away when I am using it. I hope it will lust long enough.
I like that it is made in Italy (lately everything is made in China, and quality is suffering, not a price.)

Cuisinart DGB-600BC Grind and Brew Coffee Maker (Brushed Chrome) w/ DGB-600RC Thermal Carafe Review

We Louisianans like our coffee pretty brawny, and you just can't get good, strong brew from this machine. I brought the first one back, and traded for a different one (same model) because I thought it was defective. Ended up taking #2 back, too, for a refund.
While your typical brew-only machine might have 3-4 parts, this one (I think) has 7 or 8. After making the coffee, the entire grinding portion has to be disassembled and cleaned (bean cup with lid, blades, chute) - much of the actual ground beans are trapped here, and all these parts are thickly coated with wet, steamy bean sludge.
All would be forgiven if the coffee was delightful, but it is merely lackluster and uninspired.
Good idea, but not well executed.

How many pepper mills have you owned??We have probably had at least 8-10 over the years.Some we bought, some were gifts, all of them broke.This one stands alone, I bought this at the farmers market (Harry.s) here in Atlanta about 15 years ago. I thought it was expensive and at that time had only gone through a few of them. It has never stopped working, I have had to clean the grinding wheel twice over the years, mainly because I purchase my own pepper mixture at the farmers market and occasionally can get some slightly "green" peppercorns and that will clog it up.The only downside is it is solid brass and 10" high. It tends to get knocked over once andawhile when cooking and you may get tired of looking at it. Just take some Brasso, clean it up and your old friend is looking good as new!!!

I bought this to go with my Christmas china and my salt and pepper shakers. This is the cutest thing I've seen in any pepper mill. It's very high quality, well made, with a lifetime guarantee. Breville BCG450XL Ikon Conical Burr Grinder +Cleaner Bundle Review

We purchased the Breville BCG450XL Ikon Conical Burr Grinder from Amazon on June 18, 2008 and were very pleased with its performance.I was about to write a positive product review.However, yesterday, March 29, 2009, the on/off switch (the one on the side and which is redundant to the one on the front) failed (fell apart in pieces actually) and the product is now useless.

On examination, the on of switch was so poorly designed with such non-durable materials that I am suprised it didn't fail much sooner.

Needless to say, we didn't get our money's worth out of this product. Don't waste your money!

Others have complained that even the finest "16" setting produces coffee that is still quite course.I had this problem as well, but it is fairly easy to reindex the grinder to produce a finer grind.First, unplug the grinder and leave the top grinding burr in place.Inside the whole-bean hopper you'll find 3 Phillip's head screws -- unscrew these to remove the hopper, then carfully lift off the black plastic top of the grinder.Inside you'll see another Phillip's screw on top of the fineness adjustment wheel -- turn the wheel to 16 and unscrew the screw to disengage the gears.Put a dab of White-Out on the gear around the grinding mechanism so that you know what the original setting was.Now you can turn the grinding mechanism clockwise to bring the two grinding wheels closer together.Turn clockwise until the burrs are actually touching, and you can't turn any more, then turn counter-clockwise an eighth or a quarter of a turn so that the burrs don't actually touch each other (you want to grind coffee, not the metal on the burrs).Now lift and turn the fineness adjustment wheel to "16" and screw it back in.Reassemble the grinder and run some coffee through it to check the fineness of the grind.

Capresso 556 Stainless-Steel Burr Grinder Review

I bought this grinder from my local coffee house on the recommendation of several of the employees at the shop. I've had it for almost 6 months and I couldn't be happier. I have used several other burr grinders, all of which have produced far more coffee dust than I would like. I use a press pot, so I use fairly coarse grinds, and the consistency of the grinds from this machine are perfect. I haven't had any problems with the grinder not functioning. The same button that turns it on turns it right back off. I honestly don't care how loud it is, as I would expect a coffee grinder to be loud. It is not difficult to clean at all. I just use the included bristle cleaner and a moist paper towel, it only takes a couple of minutes.

Black & Decker CBM205 Coffee Bean Mill, Stainless Steel Review

The only good thing I can say about this Black & Decker coffee grinder is the sense of morbid delight one can relish upon learning that all its many flaws are shared by others and exposed here in the Amazon customer reviews. But unless that is what you're buying a coffee grinder for -- in which case you've had WAY TOO MUCH coffee (or perhaps too little) -- it's really not worth it.

Let's review the problems with this product:

* On button must be held down. Moreover, the button is on the side, so unless you're trying to grind coffee while simultaneously thrusting the grinder off the counter, you'll have to hold onto it with your other hand. If you've got large enough hands, you may be able to hold the button down with your thumb while gripping the unit with your palm and fingers, earning a sense of accomplishment which I'm afraid to say is all too little consolation.

* Grinder gets clogged. Every couple weeks I have to take the thing apart and clear out all the coffee grit and dust. If this were the derailleur on my mountain bike, I wouldn't mind; I expect bike parts to get gritty often and need overhauling, plus there's a whole Zen thing going on there which just doesn't carry over to the desperate-for-coffee morning scene where the above scenario plays out.

* Grounds receptacle builds up static charge. This is an amazing thing. I had no idea coffee beans could so convincingly mimic the properties of magnetized iron filaments, as they cling together in a lump on the wall of the plastic container. I am forever scraping them off into the coffee filter. Sometimes they take to flight, perhaps attracted by the magnetic force of the International Space Station, only to settle scatter-shot all over the counter.

* Doesn't grind fine enough for espresso, or course enough for French press. The heavy grind itself isn't so very bad, but it's undercut the the fine powder of grounds that this machine invariably produces, and which causes so much trouble to the machinery and makes such a mess. Yet it doesn't grind quite fine enough for espresso, unless you're inclined to meticulously harvest all the aforementioned "fine powder" produced over the course of several days of grinding regular coffee.

* After a few months, works only intermittently. I've had this thing for several months, and just this past week it decided to quit working from time to time. The thing is a real stickler about having the receptacle seated just right and the lid closed. To get it to run, I have to scrape all the detritus off the base and click it in and out of position a few times, until finally it will chew up some beans for me.

With all these problems, you might ask why I'm still using this thing. I ask myself the same question every morning. Fact is, once I've got my coffee in hand, I forget all about it and carry on with my day. In fact, I've been meaning to write this review for months. For some reason I happened to think about it today while visiting Amazon for something else.

One of these days, I will remember to look for another coffee grinder when I'm at the store. It may take months, but when that happens, with God as my witness, I promise you the sledgehammer is coming out.

Please spare yourself all this anguish. It really is a very poorly designed machine -- so poorly designed, in fact, that I've sworn off ever buying anything by Black & Decker again. If they can screw up something as simple as a coffee grinder this badly, they can't be trusted to do anything right.

Braun 4041-622 Cutting Blade Review

No instructions were included with this item so I tried, unsuccessfully, to locate them on the net for 20 minutes.I finally had to call Braun customer service (they were very kind and helpful, by the way).Here is what I was told:
First, get a heavy towel to protect your hand while you grasp the blades (your best towel isn't recommended for this).Grasp the blades securely so they cannot move;
Second, get a small flat-head screwdriver.Insert this into the bottom slot of the unit.This will stop the movement of the blade;

M5 Grinder - Manual Chrome Review

Macap's M4 is a great alternative to the darling of the home-espresso crowd, the Mazzer Mini. It's solidly designed, has an excellent doser, and a few harder to find features (removable bean hopper, for example). Plus it looks great next to a Rancilio, Expobar or Quickmill espresso machine.

The only potential downside is the stepped grind selector; many enthusiasts feel that fine-tuning should be done in the grinder, and that the steps are too large. I felt the same way, until I got to know the M4 a little better - a little technique goes a long way, and it's easier to eliminate the guesswork of constant grind adjustments. Still, if extreme fine-tuning is a must for you, Macap has released a stepless version of the M4 with Mazzer-style infinite adjustment.

Vic Firth Round Pepper Mill Review

I have been using this pepper mill for a month now, and it (and the other Vic Firth peppermill I bought at the same time) is WELL worth the money. This is a perfect size to keep near the stove OR on the table. I like the fun color, which matches my kitchen, but the performance is the most important feature, and I am very happy with it. It allows such a range of grinds (none of my "cheap" mills could switch from fine to coarse and back again very well), and it doesn't leave a trail of pepper behind when you're done, either. I am completely sold on Vic Firth's line!

Plastic Tamper 57/50mm Review

As it's name indicates, it's made out of plastic where as many of the other items in this catagory are metal but it does everything they do at about 20-30% of the cost. The cost of shipping was more than the cost of the tamper. The dual size tampers is a nice feature if you are not sure what size you need for your machine and the shaft between the two is long enough that you can firmly grip the unit without your fingers/knuckles getting in the way when tamping the grinds.

Starbucks Sirena Espresso Machine, Stainless and Black Review

Bottom line up front:I'm happy with the Sirena.

I'm not a coffee snob and don't really care one way or another what name comes on the outside of the machine.I like strong espresso and this machine doesn't disappoint.There are a couple of things that I like and a couple of things that I don't.Here they are:

Like:
- Easy to use
- Can grow with you, i.e. if you want to pull out the Pressurizing disc and start tamping your own shots, you can, and after some practice, will probably get a better quality of crema and espresso.Bean quality, grind, etc... dependent.
- Quick heat up time (less than 2 mins in the morning) and quick steam (less than 10 seconds.
- Good micro-foam on the steamer.My wife likes capuccinos and the good quality foam makes her very happy.

Dislike:
- The water level sensor drives me crazy.It comes on, I refill the container, and it doesn't go off.I have to mess with the container where it attaches to the machine to get it to turn off....eventually.I've read more than a few reviews about this problem.Small overall, but annoying.
- Price.I purchased this machine at the X-mas special (499 w/grinder, barista kit, 1lb coffee with a 30% employee discount ($375 paid in the end).It was an incredible deal...that made it very worth the money.Full price...I don't know.I like this machine, but I'm cheap and I'd rather pay for quality and performance than looks.This machine offers both, but without the discount it would've made my choice more difficult.

There is a great thread on coffeegeek.com about the Sirena.A guy named Wayne, a.k.a. roastaroma, has made it his mission in life to break this machine apart and extract every bit of usefullness out of it.For true coffee lovers looking for a great machine his insights might help make up your mind.

6 month update (1 July 2008).

The steam knob stripped out about 3 weeks ago.One minute I was frothing milk, the next I was trying to get a scalding hot jet of steam to stop...awesome.I contacted SB and they gave me the number to their warranty dept.I called their warranty dept and they told me that SAECO not SB warranted the item.Okay, so I call SAECO and was not exactly pleased with the response.First, they confirmed that the unit was under warranty..good.Second, they sent me a form to fill out detailing the problems with the machine.They had me fax that form back to their warranty dept...okay so far.Third, they informed me that I was responsible for packing and shipping the machine back to them with no reimbursement.Fourth, they told me that if anything other than the previously faxed deficiencies were discovered that it would be repaired at my cost.Bottomline, if something breaks during shipment, you pay for it out of pocket along with the shipping and handling you've already spent sending a defective item back to the manufacturer.

I haven't had a lot of problems getting things serviced in the past.SAECO's warranty repair system seems a little too involved and isn't user friendly in my opinion.I contacted the Starbucks that I purchased the machine from and was able to swap out the machine...but the less than ideal experience with SAECO is important to share.

Other than that the machine is still working well and am still happy that I purchased it.Starbucks customer service made up for the problems with SAECO.

Mr. Coffee ECMP40 Pod Pump Espresso & Cappuccino Maker Review

I gave this one a chance after wasting $100 on the Krups Espremio, and I'm glad that I did. I was initially impressed by the weight of the Mr Coffee in the store; it seemed to be solidly constructed, so I tried it out even though I had learned that Mr Coffee is now a Sunbeam company. I'd had such terrible luck with Sunbeam products that I wouldn't buy anything from them. I guess that's not true anymore.
- Others have complained about having to use demitasse cups with it, but I sometimes use regular coffee cups and just remove the drip tray--not an issue. My hands are a little unsteady (too much coffee?), so I use pods to make sure that I don't get grounds on the edge of the holder.
- The pods that I get at Starbucks fit just fine, so the poster who had a problem with that might try buying them there.
- It's a little noisy, but not a LOT noisy like my old Maxim and that Krups.

All in all, I'm very pleased with it.

Grindmaster OPOD PrecisionBrewTM Single Cup Coffee / Tea Brewing System - with 10 FREE Pods Review

I bought this to replace my Bunn pod brewer.I liked the Bunn, but after going through three in two years, I figured it was time to try another brand. The Grindmaster is somewhat of a commercial-grade product and hopefully it will last longer.

Grindmaster pros include:

- Quickly brews good-tasting and very hot coffee (adjustable)
- Works with every brand of pods we've tried
- Has a large water tank, and can be plumbed for automatic fillup
- Reasonably good looking, although a bit larger than others
- Lets you program the unit to exactly fill your favorite cup

On the negative side, about the only thing I've noticed is that the unit is a bit loud when running, and there's no way to turn off the (relatively bright) blue water level indicator lamp on the front of the unit.

I'd rate the overall quality as somewhat above the Bunn and other brands, but it's not necessarily in a completely different league.

Gaggia MDF Coffee Grinder with Doser Review

For $200 this coffee grinder sucks.It's missing nice/easy to add features, like rubber stoppers on the bottom!!Both hands are busy, one holding the espresso handle and one operating the doser and the machine slides all over the counter.Also the doser never worked on my machine.It never dispensed the correct amount of coffee...and the coffee that came out of the dispenser went everywhere.Plus the dispenser handle was less than smooth to pull.I hate this machine.

Vic Firth Columbia Pepper Mill Review

One of the best pepper mills I've seen, real quality wood and craftsmanship, the bottom shown in the picture is actually the top, you grind the pepper and then stand it upside down, real easy to fill.. it even came with a plastic funnel.

A couple of turns and the grind is coarse, you feel that it's a solid piece when grinding, the mechanism is steel and for the salt mill it's plastic.

It has the Vic Firth name engraved on it...real nice.
